The role of Russia in the Nuclear Order and innovative approaches to a Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone in the Middle East are two focal points of Dr. Tarja Cronberg’s current research. She is engaged as a visiting professor at the Helsinki University, Aleksanteri-Institute and as a Distinguished Associate Fellow at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Her engagement with the European Leadership Network continues as an Executive Director of the Board. She is a former Member of the European Parliament as well as a former minister of the Finnish government. 

TARJA CRONBERG

  • Dr Tarja Cronberg has a long record of activities both as an academic in security and peace studies and as a politician in foreign and security policy, with special focus on non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament. As a member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee and Subcommittee for Security and Defence, she worked with the Iran nuclear issue as the Chair of the EP´s Delegation for Relations with Iran (2011-2014).

    Dr. Cronberg’s research has always been related to the relationship between society and technology. She is a sociologist of technology and studies how technology is transformed from an idea into practice and how technology is used in the society.

    At first, Cronberg was focused on technology of everyday life but later her interest shifted to arms industry. In the early 1990’s, Cronberg received a grant to research how the leaders of military industries in the US and Russia were transferring their armies’ technological know-how to civilian production.
